NET100 Implements Advanced Protection Features to Boost Optical LAN Uptime

Today’s enterprise LANs must be able to support real-time and critical services that demand high availability, stability and uptime. Tellabs Optical LAN, implemented by NET100, is the optimal choice because it uses the following protection mechanisms:

  1. Dual Homing Routers – The core routers where the Ethernet network uplinks between the OLT can be redundant. Protection switching occurs via standards-based Ethernet protocols.
  2. Chassis Based OLT Redundancy – This option for chassis-based OLT redundancy (e.g., Tellabs FlexSym OLT6) comes with duplex components including Ethernet Switch Units, common control, network uplinks, service module and/or whole OLTs, power plant, and fans.
  3. Highly Reliable ONTs – ONTs operate with limited human touch. As low maintenance network edge devices, they are simple, unmanaged, and thus highly reliable optical-to-electrical media converters.
  4. Simplified PON Management – Centralized management reduces human error/misuse by promoting machine-to-machine actions and operational consistency. The use of global profiles and templates eliminate human error when implementing daily moves, adds and changes.
  5. Port, Card and OLT Protection –This passive protection solution (e.g., no in-band or out-of-band communications needed) uses dual feed 2:x optical splitters that require no power, no management, and no maintenance.
  6. Fiber Route Diversity – With PON protection between the OLT and optical splitters, separate redundant fiber cables protect against fiber cuts. With card and OLT level redundancy, the highest degree of network performance as well as protection is achieved.
  7. Geographically Dispersed OLTs – With redundant OLTs, two OLTs are placed in geographically dispersed locations. This provides system level backup against building power outages and catastrophic failures.
  8. PON Path Protection – System software proactively monitors the network Ethernet uplinks, and if it detects the OLT has lost connectivity to the network core (WAN uplink), it will automatically switch.
  9. PON Health Protection – System software proactively monitors network health metrics via established threshold alarms, and if network degradation is observed, a switch will occur automatically.
  10. PON Diversification – By connecting two nearby ONTs to two different optical splitters, and by inter-mixing the two ONT’s Ethernet drops, this effectively eliminates the possibility of widespread service outages deep within the enterprise.

With these protection features an Optical LAN, implemented by NET100, can support mission critical applications with industry-leading uptime availability.
